Three top tips of how you can invest in our planet for Earth Day

« Go back

This year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet” — to mark the importance of dedicating time, resources, and energy to solving the climate and nature crisis. We make everyday Earth Day, so here are our three top tips of how you can invest in our planet – using what you have in your pocket – your money.

Break up with your Bank*

The banking sector is playing a key role in financing global warming and this has to end. We cannot have any new oil, gas or coal expansion if we want to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Despite this, between 2016 and 2021, HSBC, Barclays, Santander, NatWest and Lloyds funneled $368 billion into the fossil fuel industry. The oil and gas industry are being propped up and cannot survive with no bank support behind them.

So join the Make My Money Matter Campaign and tell your bank with an open letter, you want it to break up its secret relationship with fossil fools.

Green Your Pension*

Pensions are a secret superpower in tackling the climate emergency, and 2023 is the critical year for climate action. So ensure that your money isn’t making the situation worse.

The UK pensions industry is worth £3 trillion, with £20 billion invested each year into pensions by UK businesses and their employees. This is your money, being invested on your behalf – but do you know where it is going?

The money in corporate pensions is often invested in ways that not only jeopardise our futures, but also undermine the values, commitments, and sustainability strategies of those same businesses and the value set of its employees. As a result, your money has a carbon footprint – just like you.

You can cut your carbon 21x more than going veggie, giving up flying and switching energy provider simply by making your pension green. See Make My Money Matter open letter to tell your provider to go green.

Make My Money Matter is also calling on all businesses to sign up to The Green Pensions Charter – a public statement of support for cleaner, greener pensions, and a commitment to offer a net zero aligned pension to their staff.

Change Your Insurance

Switching your insurer can also make a difference, so why not give us a call. As the number one rated insurance provider by Ethical Consumer and The Good Shopping Guide, Naturesave really is the home of green insurance! We have almost 30 years’ experience in protecting people and the planet and each year we donate all available profits to charitable causes, including our charity, the Naturesave Trust which funds eco projects across the UK.

Our service is driven by strong ethics and we work hard to provide insurance solutions that ensure you get the cover that is right for you. Great service means owning a problem, so we handle our claims in-house and don’t use call centre’s. Not only that, we also campaign for a more sustainable insurance industry via our Campaign for Insurance Divestment, and offer free sustainability helpdesk for small businesses.
